We found a somewhat safer place to view the parade - from the steps of a close.
There are many closes leading into the High Street and other parts of the Royal Mile, and also a few in surrounding areas - the Grassmarket and Cockburn Street. These closes are narrow lanes on either side of the Royal Mile. They pass between the high buildings and emerge into the Royal Mile.
